With an increasing number of cyber security threats and the impact of incidents rising rapidly, security is a top priority for our customers. Windows Server 2022 includes new security features such as secure-core servers and secure connectivity.

Secure-Core Server

Powerful threat protection works together to provide multi-layered security across hardware, firmware and the operating system. It uses Trusted Platform Module 2.0 and System Guard to boot Windows Server securely and minimise the risks arising from firmware vulnerabilities. The Secured-Core Server also includes virtualisation-based security (VBS) features such as Credential Guard and Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI).

Credential Guard

Proactive defence for sensitive resources such as credentials, whilst HVCI applies hardware-based security to prevent advanced malware from tampering with the system. Secure connectivity adds a further layer of security during transmission for advanced protection. Windows Server 2022 enhances connection security with the faster and more secure encrypted HTTPS (Transport Layer Security) 1.3 protocol and Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 enabled by default. Customers can also further secure server communications with industry-standard AES-256 encryption, which now supports the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol and enhanced controls.

Hybrid capabilities with Azure

We are introducing new features that enable customers to harness cloud innovation whilst leveraging their on-premises investments. Azure Arc and the Storage Migration Service are two key hybrid capabilities that work best with Windows Server 2022.

Azure Arc enables customers to manage, secure and govern Windows Server on-premises, at the edge or in multi-cloud environments from a single control plane in Azure. Through Azure Arc, customers can easily utilise Azure management capabilities such as Azure Policy, Azure Monitor and Azure Defender for these servers. Furthermore, connectivity to Azure Arc can be enabled with just a few simple clicks in Windows Admin Centre. We have also enhanced Windows Admin Centre v2103 with significantly improved virtual machine management, a simpler event viewer and many other updates. Windows Admin Centre is also available in the Azure portal.

Windows Server 2022 Data Centre

improves seamless connectivity between on-premises file servers and file servers in Azure. Updates to the Storage Migration Service enable customers to migrate file servers from selected network-attached storage (NAS) systems and Windows file servers to Windows servers on Azure. Using the Storage Migration Service to migrate data to servers enables customers to maintain low latency whilst reducing the footprint of on-premises storage.

Flexible application platform

Customers use Windows Server to run distributed, large-scale applications. Consequently, we have focused relentlessly on delivering platform features and tools that improve developer productivity and support for business-critical workloads such as SQL Server. In this release, we are introducing several platform enhancements for Windows containers, including application compatibility and the Windows container experience with Kubernetes. One key improvement is the reduction in the size of Windows container images, resulting in faster download times and better performance. Furthermore, you can now run applications that depend on Azure Active Directory using Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSA) without the container host joining a domain. Furthermore, there are numerous other improvements that simplify the Windows container experience with Kubernetes. These improvements include support for host-process containers for node configuration, IPv6, and a consistent implementation of network policies with Calico.
In addition to the platform enhancements, we have an updated Windows Admin Centre tool that simplifies the containerisation of .NET applications. Once the application is in a container, you can host it in the Azure Container Registry and then deploy it to other Azure services, including the Azure Kubernetes Service.
Windows Server 2022 supports business-critical and large-scale applications such as SQL Server, which require 48 TB of memory and 2,048 logical cores running on 64 physical sockets.
