You installed Windows Server, entered the product key and got an error, or you see “Windows Server Evaluation” in the bottom-right corner with the days running out? It happens a lot: many images downloaded from Microsoft’s website are the Evaluation version, which won’t accept a Standard or Datacenter product key until it’s converted. This guide shows how to convert it in a few minutes, without reinstalling.

The short version

  1. Check the edition with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition: if it contains Eval, it needs converting.
  2. See the available editions with DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions.
  3. Convert with DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:… /AcceptEula and restart.
  4. It doesn’t work on a domain controller: that has to be demoted first.

Why the product key doesn’t work

The Evaluation version of Windows Server is meant for testing: it runs for 180 days, then the server starts shutting itself down every hour. It’s a separate edition (for example ServerStandardEval), so a Windows Server Standard or Datacenter product key isn’t accepted in Settings → Activation and returns an error.

The good news: Microsoft provides an official way to convert the evaluation version to the full version, keeping your roles, programs and configuration.

Step 1: check which edition you have

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as administrator and type:

DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition

If the result is, for example, ServerStandardEval or ServerDatacenterEval, you have the evaluation version. You can also use slmgr /dlv: the description shows the word EVAL and the days remaining.

Step 2: see what you can convert it to

DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions

The command lists the available editions, for example ServerStandard or ServerDatacenter. Keep in mind that:

  • an Evaluation Datacenter can only be converted to Datacenter;
  • a version with Desktop Experience can’t become Server Core;
  • if the edition you need isn’t listed, you need a clean installation with the right image.

Step 3: convert with your product key

Type the command with the edition name from step 2 and your product key:

DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

For Datacenter use /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter. The conversion takes a few minutes: when DISM asks, press Y to restart. The server may restart twice: that’s normal, don’t turn it off.

After the restart, check with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition: it should now show ServerStandard or ServerDatacenter, without Eval.

Does DISM say the product key isn’t valid?

Check that the product key matches the server’s edition (Standard or Datacenter) and version (for example 2022 or 2025), and that the command is typed exactly as above. If the error persists, message us with a screenshot: we’ll fix it together.

Step 4: activate the server

After the conversion, if the server isn’t already activated, enter the product key in Settings → System → Activation → Change product key, or with:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

If you get error 0xC004C008 (too many online activations), complete phone activation with our Get CID tool, as explained in Windows not activated? How to fix the errors.

Is the server a domain controller?

Microsoft doesn’t allow converting a domain controller (AD DS) from the evaluation version. The official procedure is:

  1. install a second domain controller on a server already running the full version of Windows Server;
  2. move the FSMO roles to the new domain controller;
  3. remove the AD DS role from the evaluation server, convert it as above and, if needed, promote it again.

How to avoid the problem from the start

Install Windows Server from a full image (not Evaluation). On our Download links page you’ll find Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2 images in 5 languages: after installing, you just enter the product key.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose roles, data or configuration with the conversion?

No. The conversion only changes the edition: roles, programs, shares and data stay where they are. Before working on a server, though, a backup is always recommended.

The evaluation version has expired: can I still convert it?

Usually yes: the DISM conversion also works after expiry. In the meantime the server shuts down every hour, so it’s best to do it as soon as possible.

Can I switch from Standard to Datacenter?

Yes, at any time, with the same DISM command and a Datacenter product key.

Need help with the conversion? Message us with the result of DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition: we’ll give you the exact command, for free.
