Seeing “Activate Windows. Go to Settings to activate Windows” in the bottom-right corner, or an error like 0xC004F074? Don’t panic: in most cases it’s fixed in a few minutes. This guide explains what the most common activation errors mean and how to fix them, step by step.

The short version

  1. Check the status in Settings → System → Activation and note the error code.
  2. Make sure the product key matches your edition (Home or Pro).
  3. Enter the product key with Change product key.
  4. If online activation doesn’t work, use phone activation with Get CID: you don’t have to call anyone.

First: check your activation status

Press Win + I and go to System → Activation (on Windows 10: Update & Security → Activation). Here you see:

  • the installed edition (for example Windows 11 Home or Pro);
  • the status: “Active” or “Not active”;
  • any error code, which tells you which fix to follow.

Error 0xC004F074: what it means and how to fix it

Error 0xC004F074 means Windows is looking for a company activation server (KMS) it can’t reach. It usually happens when:

  • the PC comes from a company or school and was activated with a volume licence;
  • an unofficial activator was used in the past;
  • the date, time or internet connection are wrong.

How to fix it:

  1. Check that the date and time are correct and that the PC is online.
  2. Go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter a valid product key for your edition. This replaces the old company licence.
  3. If the window doesn’t open or shows an error, use the command prompt: search for cmd, right-click and choose Run as administrator, then type:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

Replace the X’s with your product key. The first command installs the key, the second activates Windows. If you get error 0xC004C008, switch to phone activation as described below.

Other common errors

0xC004C008: maximum number of online activations reached

The product key has hit its limit of online activations. You don’t need a new key: complete phone activation with our Get CID tool, as explained in the Windows activation guide.

0xC004F050: the product key isn’t valid

Usually the key is for a different edition: for example a Pro key on Windows Home or the other way round. Check your edition in System → About. If you have Home and a Pro key, enter it with Change product key: Windows upgrades to Pro (see Windows 11 Home vs Pro).

0xC004F213 or 0x803F7001: no licence found

This often happens after changing the motherboard or reinstalling Windows on a new PC: the old digital licence isn’t recognised. Just enter a valid product key with Change product key.

0xC004C003 and 0xC004C060

Phone activation with Get CID

When online activation isn’t possible, Microsoft’s phone activation is the official method. With our tool you don’t have to call anyone:

  1. In System → Activation open Activation state and click Activate by phone.
  2. Choose your country and copy the installation ID (9 groups of digits).
  3. Open Get CID, enter your order email and the installation ID: you get the confirmation ID.
  4. Go back to the window, click Enter confirmation ID and type the 8 groups into boxes A to H.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I don’t activate Windows?

Windows keeps working, but with the “Activate Windows” watermark on screen and without being able to personalise wallpaper, colours and theme. Activating unlocks everything.

Do I have to reinstall Windows to activate it?

No. Just enter the product key with Change product key: your files and programs stay where they are.

I changed my motherboard: is my licence lost?

A digital licence is tied to the hardware. If you had linked it to your Microsoft account, you can try the Troubleshoot tool on the Activation page; otherwise you need a new product key.
