Xbox Game Pass Essential vs Premium vs Ultimate: Differences and How to Redeem Your Code

In this guide
Xbox Game Pass now has three plans: Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Their catalogues and perks are very different, and people who buy a code often get stuck when redeeming it, with errors like “this code isn’t valid in your region”. In this guide you’ll find the differences between the plans, how to redeem your code step by step and how to fix the most common errors.
The short version
- Essential: online multiplayer on console and a catalogue of 50+ games. For people who mostly play online.
- Premium: a bigger catalogue (200+ games); Xbox games arrive within a year of release.
- Ultimate: everything included, 400+ games, new releases on day one, EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics, and the best cloud quality.
- To redeem the code you need an active payment method on your Microsoft account and no Game Pass subscription currently running.
The differences between Essential, Premium and Ultimate
| Essential | Premium | Ultimate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Games in the catalogue | 50+ | 200+ | 400+ |
| Online multiplayer on console | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cloud gaming | Yes | Yes | Yes, better quality and priority |
| PC games | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| New Xbox games on day one | No | No (within 1 year) | Yes |
| EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics | No | No | Yes |
Since April 2026, new Call of Duty games no longer arrive on Ultimate on launch day: they’re added the following holiday season. Call of Duty games already in the catalogue stay available.
Which plan to choose
- You play almost only online (FIFA, Call of Duty, Fortnite with friends) and buy your own games: Essential.
- You want a big catalogue but don’t care about day-one releases: Premium.
- You want to play new games the day they come out, EA and Ubisoft games, or play a lot in the cloud: Ultimate.

Before you redeem the code: 2 requirements
- An active payment method on your Microsoft account (card or PayPal). The code doesn’t charge you anything, but Microsoft requires one to activate the subscription.
- No Game Pass subscription currently running. If you have one active, wait for it to expire before redeeming the code.
You can check both at account.microsoft.com → Payment & billing and Services & subscriptions.
How to redeem your Game Pass code
Follow the steps with the Next button. The screens are simplified: names may differ slightly.
Check your payment method
Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the account you use on Xbox. Open Payment & billing → Payment options.
There must be at least one active card or PayPal account
Check your active subscriptions
Open Services & subscriptions. If you see a Game Pass that’s still active, wait for it to expire before redeeming the code.
There must be no Game Pass currently running
Enter the code
Go to redeem.microsoft.com, enter the 25-character code you received by email and click Next.
Watch out for 0/O and 1/I when typing the code
Enter the 25-character code
Confirm the redemption
Microsoft shows you the subscription linked to the code. Click Confirm: Game Pass is activated right away.
Click Confirm
Turn off auto-renewal
Go back to Services & subscriptions, click Manage next to Game Pass and turn off recurring billing: that way you won’t be charged anything when it expires.
Click Turn off recurring billing
Or: redeem on your Xbox console
On the console press the Xbox button, open the Store, choose Redeem and enter the code with your controller.
Store → Redeem → enter the code
“This code isn’t valid in your region” error: what to do
Xbox codes are tied to a region: a code only works on a Microsoft account set to that region. Here’s what to do:
- check the region shown on the product page and the one on your account (account.microsoft.com → Your info → Country/region);
- don’t use a VPN and don’t change region just to redeem a code: you risk losing your balance and the content you bought in the other region;
- if the error persists, message us with a screenshot: we’ll check the code and replace it if needed.
Other common errors
- “This code has already been used”: check in Services & subscriptions whether the subscription is already active; sometimes the code was redeemed with another Microsoft account in the family.
- You can’t redeem because you already have a subscription: wait for the current subscription to expire.
- The code isn’t accepted: make sure you typed all 25 characters correctly (watch out for 0/O and 1/I) and that a payment method is on file.
